The river’s periodical flooding has re- sulted in vast wetlands and flood plains, as well as natural fords supporting a diverse population of fish and aquatic insects. Imjin River estuary is an excellent habitat for winter migrants coming to the DMZ area. The stable ecological system supports the life of predatory birds including the cinereous vulture, white-tailed sea eagle, and golden eagle, all of which are at the top of the food chain. A number of endangered species have also been observed in the area. Bean goose

During the winter, fords that remain unfrozen transform into a retreat place and roosting ground for winter migrants. This area have an expansive fields of adlay, which account for 70% of the national production. Red-crowned cranes and white-naped cranes overwinter in the area, feeding on fallen adlay grains. The ecology of the area’s hilly mountains, shallow streams, riverside, mudflats, terraced rice and adlay fields offer a wide array of nesting options and favorable living conditions for winter migrant birds.
